The Bells

The Bells

Dr. David Atkins

10.3.1930 – 30.12.2008

Dr. David Atkins served our community as a respected GP for 36 years and was a member of St. Giles’ Church for almost 20 years as Tower Captain and Chorister.

A founder member of Leeds University Society of Change Ringers and a long term member of the Yorkshire Association, David was a ringer at Batley for over 60 years followed by All Saints Pontefract and St Giles’ Church.

David was also an accomplished Bass with Pontefract Choral Society for many years.

We all remember him with love and are grateful for his friendship, his contribution to our Church and wider community and his wonderful dry humour.

God bless you David and may your bells ring in Heaven…

St. Giles Church has ten bells, the tenor being 18 cwt and 19 lb in the key of E.

The bells were recast from an original eight with two new trebles added by Taylor of Loughborough in 1920.

Currently, St. Giles’ has 7 established ringers and 4 learners.

We always extend a warm welcome to new members, experienced or not, to join us in this very rewarding and important activity in Church life…and it’s great fun !!
