The Pelican 30 Second Interview
During the interregnum, we thought we could take an opportunity to get to know some St Giles people a little better, so each month the Pelican features a 30-second interview with a member of our congregation, staff or wider community. This month we interviewed, Dr Steven Walker. Steven is the Scientific Director of St Giles Medical. The St Giles Medical team work from Vestry House.
Where is home for you?
Home is a small ‚working man‘s cottage’ (according to the deeds) from 1822 hidden away in Shepherd’s Bush.
What is your earliest memory?
Sunwater. My mum offering me a glass of water. Of course I wanted something better and refused to drink. She had the clever idea of holding the full glass up in front of the window and catching the sun through the glass. „This is not water but special sunwater“. I drunk it all!
What did you want to be when you were growing up?
I remember the GP visiting our house as a child to look at two swellings on my arm (this would not happen today). These he lanced. Problem solved. What impressed me was his medical case with lots of drawers. After that said I wanted to be a doctor. My parents never let me forget this!
What is your favourite time of the year?
Autumn, from my birthday in October up to 25th December. Colourful leaves, open fires, anticipation of Christmas. The inner child in me!
What is the worst job you’ve done?
had a holiday job in Germany working in a chicken restaurant. Every week 1200 frozen chickens would arrive from Holland. They were thrown down the cellar steps and I was supposed to catch them! The delivery driver really enjoyed this bit. For my part I emerged bruised and cold. For a long while afterwards I could not face eating chicken!
What is your favourite smell?
Lavender
What do you consider your greatest achievement?
Years ago, I was awarded an honorary professorship in recognition of my research. More recently it is building up a small business in two countries, delivering interesting work and surviving. I have never worked so hard for so little financial gain.
When you’re not at work, where would you most like to be?
Sitting in the sun with a beer and friends listening to loud festival music. Alternatively, on a long country walk or skiing down a mountain.
Who would play you in the film of your life?
George Clooney because he tall, handsome, and pretty cool, everything I would like to be!
What is the most important lesson life has taught you?
When an opportunity presents itself in life, one should take it. Life is an adventure. Doors open for a reason. I have always regretted missing out, or not being brave.
