Parish Events in October

There are a number of exciting and enjoyable things in the schedule for October. Please do come along and lean in to what’s going on.

Harvest & First Sunday Giving

The season of harvest will be marked at our services on 2nd October and we will be accepting non-perishable items to donate to the Covent Garden Food Bank at The Covent Garden Community Centre. All donations of support will be most welcome. We will also be donating our first Sunday collections to the Royal Agricultural Benevolent Institution. RABI works across the UK to support the people who produce our food, particularly agricultural workers who have fallen on hard times or are unable to work due to age or ill health.

While it is many a year since anyone took a plough to the fields around St Giles, we are reminded during the current time of rising commodity prices and widespread hardship, how tenuous our supply of basic foodstuffs can be. Please support these two worthy causes as much as you are able.

Parish Walk

A walk up Box Hill is planned for the morning of 15th October. Like our walk up Ivinghoe Beacon in the spring, it will be chance to spend the morning in the fresh air, to take gentle 3 mile walk in the beautiful Surrey countryside and stop for a bite to eat on the way home. If you would like to come along then please let the Rector know or sign up on the sheet at the back of church. This is a great oppportunity to get to know others in the congregation better, so if you are new to St Giles, you're especially welcome to join.

Confirmation Service & Lunch

Bishop Sarah will be visiting St Giles for 11am Holy Communion on 16th October to conduct confirmations. We are delighted to be presenting several candidates for confirmation again this year, as well as a candidate from St Mary Le Bow, and hope that as many members of the congregation as possible will come to support our candidates as they take this important step in their faith. This is not only an opportunity to encourage newer members of the community, but also a time to reflect on the commitment you made at your own confirmation (however long ago that might have been!)

Following the service, we will be holding a Bring and Share Lunch. If you are able, please bring a dish to share - the St Giles Day lunch was a great success and we can hopefully replicate this for the bishop. In order to keep track of numbers, can you please drop a note to Lesley in the parish office to let her know if you plan to bring something for the lunch.

Evensong and Curry

This month's curry night will take place after Evensong on Sunday 30th October. We’ll be going to the marvellous Punjab Curry House on Neal Street. As always, all are welcome to join and if you'd like more details, please do speak to the Rector or sign up at the back of church.

The Prayer Book Society’s 50th Anniversary

Please note: The Prayer Book Society’s 50th Anniversary at Westminster Abbey on the 8th of October has been postponed because of the rail strike. Not wanting to be defeated the Society are hosting a service at St James', Garlickhythe at 11.00. Please do go along if you can.
